Palmoplantar Hyperhidrosis - Botox or Sympathectomy ?

A new study published by Baumgartner and colleagues in the July 2009 issue of the Annals of Vascular Surgery regarding thoracic Sympathectomy for palmar hyperhidrosis shows that:

Compensatory hyperhidrosis was present in 56% of patients but only 3.2% of these had severe compensatory hyperhidrosis with significant discomfort.
All patients with severe compensatory hyperhidrosis were men.
There were no other significant operative complications.
The safety and overwhelming efficacy of bilateral thoracic sympathectomy compared to medical management of severe palmoplantar hyperhidrosis was demonstrated in this study.

According to the authors, “rather than being a last resort," thoracic Sympathectomy can be confidently recommended as first-line treatment for the typical, severe form of palmoplantar hyperhidrosis.
