Are there differences between eccrine sweat glands in patients with hyperhidrosis and patients without hyperhidrosis ? A study published in the British Journal of Dermatology (2001; vol 145; pages 398-301) looked at skin biosy specimens from the underarms or neck of patients with hyperhidrosis and compared them to control specimens from individuals without hyperhidrosis. The study did not show any pathological changes in the ultrastructure of eccrine glands in patients with hyperhidrosis. The authors, Bovell and colleagues from the School of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, Glasgow Caledonian University and the Institute of Biomedical and Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Scotland, concluded that the absence of structural defects in the glands indicates that future studies should concentrate on the investigation of neurohumoral or secretory cell metabolic abnormalities in patients with hyperhidrosis. http://www.pathguy.com/histo/077.htm
